Application and Interview Information

PGY-1 appointments are available through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Our program code in the NRMP is 1330140C. The appointment begins with a 5-day mandatory orientation prior to the start of clinical training on June 24th. PGY-1 clinical training ends on June 23 of the following year, followed by an extra week of paid time off completing the PGY-1 appointment on June 30 of that year.

Our program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for all applications. Our program places high value on Program Signals when granting interviews due to our application volume and the importance of residency "fit" being a mutual feeling between applicant and program. Due to the high volume of signals we receive compared to our number of interview slots, we are very unlikely to extend interview offers to applicants who do not signal our program. Please use the signal to indicate your interest, even if you are from a local medical school.

A complete application includes:

  1. The ERAS Common Application is required for all applications
  2. USMLE Step 1 AND/OR COMLEX Level 1 reports are required at the time of application. USMLE Step 2 CK or COMLEX level 2 CE reports are NOT required at the time of application, but are highly recommended to be available to us no later than February 1st for ranking.
  3. Transcript
  4. 3-4 letters in support of your application from medical school faculty. One letter should be a "chair's letter/structured letter" from your school's department of medicine (i.e. Internal Medicine Structured Evaluative Letter "IM SEL"). At least one should be from a robust clinical internal medicine experience such as your third and fourth-year clinical core IM rotation. Others can be clinical letters from medicine or other specialties, research mentors, or other faculty letters describing your experiences in medical school. If you were in another residency training program(s), you must include a letter from the program director of that program(s).

International Medical Graduates & Non-US Citizen/Permanent Resident information:

We accept IMG applications through ERAS and sponsor J1 visas when necessary. In addition to the above requirements, IMG applicants should:

  2. An applicant must be ECFMG verified by February 1st in order to be ranked and must provide evidence that they will be ECFMG certified in time to process paperwork and begin employment on June 17th when resident orientation begins (time must be included for visa processing after ECFMG certification if applicable). Certification can't be processed until a graduation diploma is received by ECFMG
  3. Have first time passing scores on USMLE Step 1 at the time of application, and on Step 2 by February 1 in order to be ranked
  4. Be less than 4 years out from medical school graduation

The Virtual Interview Process:

After the initial application review of ERAS-submitted applications, selected applicants will be invited for a virtual interview day on a rolling basis. The web-based/virtual interview day will be 5-6 hours in length and consist of a formal introduction and overview of the program by the program director, a tour through the hospital and clinics with one of our chief residents, two small group discussions with residents, a lunch break, and the day will conclude with two 30 minute interviews with program leadership.

We offer a few on-site events during the interview season purely for those applicants that need to set foot in the hospital and clinics in order to be comfortable in their decision to train with us and potentially spend a career at Abbott. We understand this is a big decision in your career and know that there are some applicants that can't make that decision without having visited the hospital and people at Abbott. Attending these experiences has no impact on our ranking of applicants and occur after applicant scoring/ranking has already occurred. We will also hold additional virtual gatherings with residents for those applicants who want more information after their interview day but cannot travel for an in-person event.

-----------------------------------------------

We do not submit any information on our residents or graduates to the Doximity Residency Navigator nor do we ask our residents to participate in it, so we cannot speak to the accuracy of any information on that site. We do submit information to FREIDA each year. The most accurate and up-to-date information about our training program exists on this applicant website.
